Library Services for Faculty

Welcome!

As a faculty member of Armstrong Atlantic State University, you are important to Lane Library. Not only do you help determine the resources of the Library, but also your attitude and enthusiasm shape your students' feelings toward library use. The Library staff hopes to continue its tradition of friendly and competent service to aid you in your teaching and research tasks.

This abbreviated version of the Lane Library Faculty Handbook is designed to familiarize you with Library policies, resources, and services as well as introduce many recent additions and planned enhancements. Please take time to acquaint yourself with this site, and always feel free to visit your Library. The welcome mat is always out.

See Lane Library's policies and each department's page for detailed information about services, personnel, procedures, and frequently asked questions. In addition, the AASU Faculty Handbook provides a brief overview of Library policies.

Online Databases in the Library

Lane Library's online, Web-based catalog of books and media is known as GIL, an acronym for GALILEO Interconnected Libraries. GIL is an extension of the GALILEO initiative funded by the Governor of Georgia and the General Assembly to enhance and expand educational opportunities for the citizens of Georgia. GIL is accessible from terminals within the Library as well as from the Library Web site. No password is required to access GIL.

Georgia Library Learning Online, or GALILEO, is a statewide initiative to improve information access for the people of Georgia through their college, university, school, and public libraries. GALILEO provides access to more than 100 databases, including several that provide the full text of many journal articles and others that provide the full text of useful reference works.

Faculty may access GALILEO on campus from their offices or from more than 80 workstations within the Library. Off-campus access is available to qualified users via password. AASU faculty, staff, and currently-enrolled students may display this semester's GALILEO password by accessing Your Account in GIL. If you have difficulty obtaining the password, call the Reference Department at (912) 921-5478.

Databases (i.e. JSTOR, Contemporary Authors, Education Full Text, Evidence Based MEdicine Reviews, PsychINFO, Books In Print + Reviews, Web of Science Series with Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, and Science Citation Indexes) are described and linked from the Library's Additional Databases page.

Lane Library's Journals and Newspapers

Most current issues of paper periodicals and current & recent back issues of newspapers to which the Library subscribes are shelved in the Current Periodicals Reading Room near the Circulation Desk. Most back issues of journals and magazines are bound and arranged alphabetically by title on the first floor of the Library. Lane Library also maintains a collection of historic Georgia newspapers on microfilm.

To determine if Lane Library subscribes to or has electronic access to a particular journal, search the Journal Locator. However, since GALILEO and other electronic databases are dynamic resources, it is problematic to maintain up-to-date listings of dates covered and titles included. If you have any questions about which titles are available, call the Reference Department at (912) 921-5478.

Lane Library's Print Collection

The Library's books, selected to support the University's curriculum, are arranged by Library of Congress classification numbers and cataloged in GIL. Other than the bestsellers (which are displayed on the first floor in the Current Periodicals Reading Room), most of Lane Library's circulating books are on the second floor. The circulating collection includes Curriculum Lab materials (books approved for use by teachers in Georgia and Chatham County) and children's books (Juvenile Collection).

There is no separate Government Documents collection. Government documents are either cataloged and shelved in the book collection on the second floor or, if they are periodicals, are shelved on the first floor with the journals. Many government publications are now available electronically; consult the Reference Department for more information on possible electronic access to government documents.

Lane Library's Media Collection

Located on the second floor of the Library in Media Services, the software collection includes interactive multimedia, educational media, and feature films in the following formats: VHS video, DVD, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, music CD, audiocassette, slide, and laser disc. The hardware collection includes laptop computers (PC and Mac), LCD projectors, digital cameras and camcorders, as well as traditional audio-visual equipment.

Lane Library's Microform Collection

The Reference area contains several microform reader-printers and a large portion of the ERIC microfiche collection. Other microform collections are housed in the first floor hallway of the Library. Major microform collections include:

Library of American Civilization (LAC), a microfiche collection of approximately 10,000 records, includes books, pamphlets, and periodicals relating to all aspects of American life from Columbus to the outbreak of World War I. The materials in LAC are not included in GIL; they are indexed in separate author, title, and subject volumes available in the Reference area.

Library of English Literature (LEL), a collection that reflects the rich heritage of the English literary tradition, includes works of all genres from Chaucer's time to World War I. First editions and early imprints are included, along with bibliographies, letters, biographies, historical accounts, and works of major and minor writers. The materials in LEL are not found in GIL; access is available through separately published author and title catalog volumes shelved in the Reference area.

Early British Periodicals Collection (EBP I & II) is a series comprising 168 periodical titles published primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. Literature, philosophy, history, science, the fine arts, and the social sciences are among the subjects covered in this collection.

ERIC Resources in Education is a massive, continuing collection of literature in education. This microfiche collection contains conference proceedings, research findings, project reports, and curriculum-oriented materials.

London Times (1785-1922) Palmer's Index to the Times (1790-1922) is located in the Reference area.
