What is Interlibrary Loan?
The Interlibrary Loan Department at AASU assists currently enrolled students, current faculty and staff, and faculty emeriti of AASU in obtaining library materials unavailable at Lane Library. We locate and borrow needed materials from other libraries on behalf of eligible AASU patrons.
Examples of items usually available through ILL include circulating books, theses, dissertations, and music scores. It is the policy of Lane Library not to borrow textbooks for students via ILL. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Materials generally NOT available for loan include:
- Reference Books
- Microfilm or fiche
- Entire periodical volumes or issues
- Newspapers
- Audiovisual materials
- Special Collection materials
- Computer disks or CDs
How do I submit an ILL request?
Fill out the online ILL Request form. Before filling out any request, make sure Lane Library does not own the item needed by searching for books in the GIL Catalog and journal titles in the Journal Locator.
How long does ILL take?
On average, it takes two weeks for a request to arrive. However, items not readily available in our region could take as long as four weeks to arrive. If the first library contacted by the ILL Department cannot supply the item you need, we will then try to obtain the item you requested from another library. It is also important to remember that incomplete or incorrect information on your request form may cause delay or result in unfilled requests.
How will I be notified when my materials arrive?
When your requested material arrives, the ILL Department will make only one attempt to contact you, using the telephone number or e-mail address you provided on the request form. It is your responsibility to follow up on your request after two weeks.
Materials received on ILL are held at the ILL office in Lane Library. We will hold books for two weeks or until they are due back at the lending library, whichever comes first. Articles will be held for six weeks and will then be discarded.
How long may I keep ILL materials?
The average loan period is between two and three weeks. The lending library determines the loan period, which is clearly marked on your ILL material. If you need a renewal, contact the ILL Department before the book is due. You may request a renewal via our e-mail address ill@armstrong.edu or by telephone at (912) 344-3125.
Students who fail to return ILL materials will have their student record encumbered, meaning that the student will not be able to graduate, obtain transcripts, register for classes, or check out library materials. Individuals who repeatedly return ILL materials late may have his or her ILL privileges suspended for a semester. If books are turned in late once full privileges are restored, Lane Library reserves the right to revoke ILL privileges permanently.
All returnable materials (books, dissertations, etc.) must be brought to the ILL office. Do NOT return ILL materials in the book drop. If you do, and damage occurs to the materials, you will be responsible for any costs.
